Frankfurt am Main, the dynamic and international financial and trade fair city with the most imposing skyline in Germany. This is the image that many visitors associate with the Main metropolis. But the city in the heart of Germany and Europe can offer many other facets and contrasting variety. Near to the skyscrapers you can find cosy Ebbelwei pubs and at the heart of the bustling city centre you can find historical sights again and again. Frankfurt is not just proud of its most famous son, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The Kaiserdom (Cathedral) and the Paulskirche, the cradle of German democracy, are also to be found here.

Aachen lies in a virtual valley, surrounded by fields, woods and hills. At its portals close by where three countries meet, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium you find the nature reserves of the Ardennes and the Eifel. This is where the Romans established themselves, taking advantage of the warm water springs beneath the town centre. Standing on the Hof, one feels the tension between modern architecture and the older districts of the town: On one side, one can see the Dom where Charlemagne was crowned during the Middle Ages; on the other side, one looks at the Gothic town hall. Academic study and scientific research especially in the fields of technology, engineering and the natural sciences very much belong to Aachen. The students of the RWTH-University as well as the University of Applied Sciences dominate the town.

Its function as a centre point in the Ruhrgebiet, one of the most varied event and cultural regions in Europe, makes the City of Essen an ideal destination and starting point for all visits. Essen offers a great deal to its visitors: Tourists may immerse themselves in the not so long ago but today completely historic epoch of its industrial past. Tours through the above ground plant of the former "Zeche Zollverein XII"-mine take tourists on a "coal journey" from the point where it was mined, via the coal washing facility, and to the point of loading and shipment. The Zeche Zollverein colliery and coking plant ensemble has been listed by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site. An insight into the life of an entrepreneur at the time of industrialisation can be gained by a visit to "Villa Hügel", for decades the company and family seat of the Krupp dynasty. Last but not least, Essen will be the European Capital of Culture in 2010.
